Linux Screenshots

February 28, 1999

This is the earliest Linux screenshot I have. Back then I was running KDE. And this almost looks like a default install too. Except for the titlebar colors. Background graphic is from Digital Blasphemy.

Still running KDE. Well at least it's themed. Here you can see that I found about about transparent terminal windows, using Eterm. And an early version of GAIM is shown (before AOL made the GAIM developers remove all of their intellectual property – the stick man and AOL triangle). Background graphic is from Digital Blasphemy.

April 17, 1999

Okay, now I'm finally running Enlightenment, along with Gnome. This is pretty much the default theme (at the time), and it still looks pretty sweet. One of the reasons that I got away from KDE is that it was too Windows-ish for me and I was ready to lose the training wheels. So we have the Shinymetal E theme, and the gradient GTK theme here. Background graphic is from digital blasphemy.

E themes kick ass. Especially this one - Absolute E. In fact, I'm using this theme as I write this. Gradient GTK theme. Adding more stuff to the GNOME panel. Also created a separate gnome panel in the upper left to show all my running tasks, which would autohide. Cool. This is also the first time I customized my bash prompt. Pretty 31337 looking, eh? =) Woops, how did that core dump get in there?? Doh. Tiled background is from Propaganda.

April 25, 1999

Hmmm... So what's new here? Same E and GTK theme. Oh I see, I had just installed my second CPU, so now I'm running Linux SMP style! Now you can see me running RC5DES and SETI at the same time! Oooh. =) I'm also playing the QuickTime Star Wars trailer via GXanim, which is a GTK-based xanim frontend. Digital Blasphemy background.

May 1, 1999

I really liked this theme combo. The E theme is Ice and the GTK theme is Bluthe. Too bad the Ice theme wasn't ported over to E16 or else I'd be running it right now. I guess this is the time I started playing mp3s on my system. =) Used GQmpeg to play em because they had cooler looking skins than x-amp (now known as xmms). I also found this cool oscilloscope applet for my GNOME panel, which you can see in the lower right. Digital Blasphemy background.

May 9, 1999

Pretty much the same as the previous shot. I wanted to show my friends at work that I could run our software product in Linux – using VMware. I remember when I first installed VMware, I was totally tripping out that I could run Windows in a window. I was quite amused by that. =) I ended up buying myself a copy of VMware. It's totally worth it.

May 24, 1999

Went for a darker look this time around. An old version of the Jedi E theme along with an old GTK theme called alpha. Found this cool script on freshmeat that will rip and encode CDs into mp3s, and naming them automatically. You can see that running on the top Eterm window. In addition to ripping/encoding mp3s, I'm running 2 intances of SETI, without any noticeable performance hits. Propaganda tiled background.

June 5, 1999

Went for the monotone look here. Here's an early version of the Blueheart E theme and the iceberg GTK theme. And from the looks of the screenshot, I was running the CVS version of GNOME.

June 28, 1999

This wallpaper / E theme / GTK theme kicked so much ass, I needed to get a screenshot. The wallpaper is from a game called Fallout 2. The E theme is e14, I believe, and the GTK theme is gradient.

January 2, 2000

Woah. Apparently it has been a while since that last screenshot. Almost 6 months. Well a big part of that was due to my new job at DEN. I started working there in August. Anyways, here is a rather busy looking screenshot. Using e16 now. Now using epplets instead of GNOME applets. Notice that the GNOME panel is missing. I'm still running it, but it's set to autohide. The wallpaper is something I hacked together using a pic of Shirley Manson, a propaganda background, and the cool DEN logo. =)

April 19, 2000

A screenshot of my desktop at work. Blueheart e theme and matching GTK theme. Also a customized version of EFM, again with the DEN logo.

June 18, 2000

Felt like taking a shot here to submit to e.t.o since it has been a long while. Installed EFM from CVS which is sooo sweet looking! Got some feedback on the background and how I changed the icon fonts. Read the docs! =)

July 23, 2000

Got my Miro PCTV card working in Linux. I just had to recompile the kernel to include the bttv drivers (not as a module) and used xawtv to watch in X. Shweet.

August 20, 2000

Got bored, so I decided to come up with another screenshot for e.t.o. Mozilla is stable enough for me to run regularly, and I'm running it with an IE skin. The website pictured here is fucking hilarious! It's all about Canadian world domination. Check it oot...

September 28, 2000

Badass Quake 3 background I found somewhere. Customized EFM with tweaked background and Q3 logo. Yes, I like Quake 3. =) And finally got lm_sensors working.

December 8, 2000

Fresh install of linux-mandrake 7.2 – after I tweaked it a bit. The Nvidia openGL drivers work sweet!

March 7, 2001

Hmm... Nothing too exciting here. Just some random progs running. I just wanted to see if my web screenshot grabber app thingy works. =)

March 16, 2001

Just reinstalled Red Hat 7.0, after playing with RH 7.1 beta yesterday. In the process of installing RH7, I found that Eazel's Nautilus file manager was released, which is what you see here. Pretty funky stuff! =)

April 12, 2001

Someone just ported over the Hand of God theme over to e16, and I'm stoked! Love it... Very old school. Reminds me of when I was running e14/e15 years ago. So that's the theme here. Also running GAIM, cmatrix, xawtv (watching the Daily Show).

May 1, 2001

Just updated to the latest Ximian GNOME. Also going for a darker look this time around.

June 15, 2001

Just installed RedHat 7.1 a couple days ago and here it is. The previous incompatibility issues I had before are resolved now, so I can run RH 7.1 with no problems. I dig the background pic. Goes well with the AbsoluteE theme.

July 30, 2001

Watching Baseketball... Ripping my CD collection... It's all legal... =)

September 2, 2001

Here's the shot I promised, showing my tweaked out gkrellm app. With this desktop, I also wanted to make the GNOME toolbar as unobtrusive as possible, so I created a background just for it, to make it blend into the desktop pic. Also got USB working.

November 18, 2001

Just keeping the screenshot pretty simple. Decided to give Sawfish another try, since it's taking themes.org a long-ass time to get the Enlightenment themes back up.

November 20, 2001

Well I just couldn't get used to the Sawfish way of doing things, so I moved back to Enlightenment. One reason is because I found this site that has some badass dark looking E themes.

January 20, 2002

I decided to go "old school" and switch to using WindowMaker instead of GNOME/Enlightenment. It's based on the NeXTSTEP user interface and I really dig it. I guess I'm over the "eye candy" stage. Or maybe this is a stage in itself. Either way, it's hella faster and I really like the clean and simple interface.

January 30, 2002

Mac envy? =) I'm still running WindowMaker. Aqua themes all around for WM, GTK, XMMS.

March 4, 2002

I was bored, so I decided to take a cap of my desktop. Linux.com WindowMaker theme grabbed from somewhere. I modified the gkrellm brushedmetal theme to match.

March 28, 2002

Say hello to KDE v2.2.2. I had no idea KDE progressed so far. The last time I used it was when I first started using Linux, and KDE was at version 1. Back then, there wasn't much you could do to customize it, which is why I moved to GNOME/E. But I just saw this screenshot of the upcoming KDE v3 and decided to give v2 a shot and I am very impressed. Seems much snappier than Ximian, all K-apps have the same look and feel, and the dialogs look much better. If you're wondering how I got QuickTime running, there's a program called "Crossover" which will let you use Windoze plugins in Linux. It even displays embedded media inside web pages. Very slick. You can download a demo at codeweavers.com.

May 5, 2002

I've been running Gentoo Linux for over a month, and this is my first screenshot. Running KDE3 (simple one-line command to install all of KDE3 in Gentoo). Watching embedded QuickTime video in Mozilla thanks to Crossover plugin. Getting old school with Max Headroom on TechTV. =)

June 4, 2002

Keramik theme/style... Finally! I saw a screenshot of this theme months ago when KDE3 was announced, which is one of the main reasons why I switched back to KDE. It's still not officially available yet, but someone on kde-look.org snagged the theme from CVS and packaged it nicely.

July 10, 2002

Got bored of KDE so I decided to try out a new windowmanager all together – Fluxbox. Yikes, it starts up even faster than WindowMaker!

August 14, 2002

Still running fluxbox. Gaim r0x0rs – I found out that I could get my yahoo and ICQ accounts on here too, ad free! Megan and Morgan should have their own show on TechTV... Penguins are cool...

December 1, 2002

Finally got my computer up and running again, this time with Gentoo 1.4rc1. Fully optimized for my CPU with gcc 3.2. Yum! What you see here is KDE 3.0.4, with Noia icons and nice wallpaper of Gentoo's Larry the Cow.

February 19, 2003

Running Gentoo 1.4rc2 and KDE 3.1. Using Alan Cox's patched 2.4.21 kernel (to fix some IDE funkiness that's happening with 2.4.19 and .20)

May 6, 2003

Ahh, enlightenment...

June 15, 2003

Switched back to KDE. Kinda got used to having a fully functional and integrated desktop environment.

July 9, 2003

My first laptop screenshot. It's all about choice – I'm running KDE on my desktop and GNOME on the laptop. Using bluecurve theme for everything. I haven't switched over to RedHat – there just happens to be a Gentoo ebuild for bluecurve. Nice.

October 19, 2003

Had to reinstall Gentoo on my laptop. Got it back up and running with GNOME 2.4.

December 30, 2003

Currently showing off the GnoMetal theme, Gaim's l33tness, deaddreamer background.
