Lookee, another post!

So today was my first day working at another Sony company – Sony Online Entertainment – the makers of Everquest, the upcoming Star Wars Galaxies game, and Planetside, which is the game I’ll be working on.

My gig at SCEA was put on hiatus last week. They shipped the game I was testing, and with nothing else coming in for testing, I moved on to bigger and better things. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. I interviewed when things started to get crazy busy (in the QA world, that means the product’s test cycle is coming to an end), and I got the offer to work at SOE the day before the game at SCEA shipped, so I didn’t have too much time off. Which is good.

Things seem to be much more professional at SOE compared to SCEA. I equated SCEA to being like high school with all the jocks because it got pretty rowdy at times, and SOE feels more like college where people are serious about school (or in this case, work). At SOE, I don’t have that newbie/freshman feeling I got when I first started at SCEA. The other Planetside testers at SOE actually introduced themselves to me. Shocking, I know! And I finally have my own cube that I can call home for the next 6+ months. At SCEA, I moved around depending on the game I was working on, so I never really had my own work area. Didn’t help much that somebody once swapped out my PS2 for a broken one.

Anyways, enough about work. You’ll notice I added a “now reading” bio thing to the left. I’ve been doing a lot more reading lately, mostly because I don’t get any TV here at Jeff’s. No cable, and even rabbit ears didn’t pick up anything. I guess nothing comes in here in Escondido. So I’ve just been reading to kill some time and relax.

Right now, I’m reading a book about Richard Stallman and his crusade for free software. The cool thing is that the book is also under the GNU license, which means you can read it for free here. It’s exactly the same as the hardcover I’m reading, just with fewer typos and grammatical errors.

So what are you waiting for? Read it!!!
