Server saw the light

I think my server had a near-death experience, though I think it was partially my fault. I was talking with a friend last night, and we were on the topic of distributed.net, and how I haven't crunched any units in about 2 years. So I decided to download the client and try it out. Well I made the mistake of copying it over to my server and running it on there as well, and I think it was overheating, as it just died a few minutes later.

I was quick to blame Pacbell on my lost connection, but then after a few pings I realized my server was down. So I just reset it and saw no hard drive activity. Hmmm... Tried it again and it went into an endless loop of rebooting after a few seconds. So I powered down, thinking my server finally crapped out.

So then I rerouted the network cable and plugged my desktop system into the DSL modem, just so I could continue my chat, and also checked out how much a new CPU and board would cost. I was kinda stressing over that when I was trying to sleep, since the job situation prevents me from buying any kind of expensive hardware.

Luckily for me, it looks like I won't have to do that. I think I'm gonna get a fat heatsink for it if I can find one (it's an old AMD K6 200), and also take some compressed air to blow out the family of dust bunnies that I know is inside the case, as the server is sitting in my closet. =)
