Through foresight (or sheer luck), I have some content from ye-olde underactive.net saved on optical. I have already imported my older blog posts into the main blog feed. But there's some other content I had on there as well, which I'll be restoring here for posterity:
Linux screenshots
(added 2025-09-08)
So the optics behind this page. It was 1998 and really the only options most of us have seen were Windows 95 or Windows 98. I actually wanted to try BeOS because it just looked cool. I mentioned it to a coworker and he said I should check out Linux. Next thing I know I have a boxed copy of RedHat 5 that I picked up from CompUSA. By default, starting up X brought up Enlightenment with GTK apps, and it blew my mind. It was hard to describe, but using it felt like I was closer to bare metal, as opposed to behind behind layers and layers of Windows APIs. And the window decorations were slick, no longer bound by windows all having straight edges and 90-degree corners. themes.org was also a thing, with subdomains for each of the popular window managers at the time where you could browse and upload screenshots, and share theming info. These were the screenshots I either uploaded there, or to my site's front page.
Posts from my old blog
(added 2025-09-08)
Early 2ks internet was a different time. I've edited posts to prevent any doxing, and reformatted posts to be more readable. I don't know why but I thought it was cool to not have to not type in capital letters and used the ellipsis excessively (hey, I was in my 20s!), and so sooo edgy.
Also I deleted any posts where I aired my aspects of my personal life in public, and useless microblogging-type posts. But the content, grammar, cringey l33tspeak remains in place.
Also I apologize in advance (and/or retroactively) for my trite vocabulary (hey, it was in my 20s!). I did a word-count of my exported blog json and did some fuzzy regex and found the following:
- 52 instances of "ass" and its derivatives ("kickass", "badass", etc)
- 12 instances and variations of "sweet"
- 30 instances of "heh"
- 291 instances of ellipses
Again, sorry.
